The surgical procedure is usually performed under local anesthesia. A general anesthetic may be used for patients who have no restrictions. An incision is made in the gum and the titanium screw is placed into the osseointegratedjaw bone. This screw is later extracted through the same incision when the implant is fixed firmly into place. Full healing and rehabilitation are required to restore normal functioning of the chewing and teeth muscles.

 

There are two types of dental implants: porcelain and acrylic. The former consists of a composite material that looks similar to natural teeth while the latter consists of ceramic materials. Both of them look and feel like natural teeth, and they can withstand plenty of chewing and grinding without causing any discomfort or damage to the gums. The advantage of porcelain implants over acrylics is that they cannot be easily chips or cracked.

 

Dentists often prefer single implants because they require less than five visits to the dentist in order to achieve desired results. Single implants can also be easily implanted behind molars, on either the back or on the side. They do not require crowns and therefore, they do not contribute to the problem of tooth decay, as crowns do.
